WHY THIS YEAR'S NORDSTROM POST LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT / PIVOT
It's that time of year again - the #NSALE is kicking off and I think it's safe to say we all have a love/hate relationship with it. Over the last couple of weeks, I've had a combination of DMs and comments regarding the sale. Some asking what my plan is this year and when I'll have my picks up and others thanking me for not filling my stories and their feeds with 'all things Nordstrom sale'. Honestly, there's enough of that out there already.
So, this year as I've pivoted quite a bit within this space, I thought to myself - how do I want to go about the Nordstrom sale this time around? Are there a lot of great items on sale? Sure. Do they make it first come, first serve so that everyone freaks out and buys everything they can, as fast as they can? Absolutely. Will I be purchasing from the sale this year? Yes, a few things. However, do any of us need any of it? Probably not. Will I allow it to consume my mind + time while I'm on vacation? Definitely not.
For years, I have set an alarm for 3AM EST, woken up early to shop the best from the sale + rounded up my favorites for you guys and spent countless hours creating content surrounding those items. Blog post after blog post and instagram stories full of what you need and why you need it. In turn, this sale has always been a huge source of income for me, as I make a small commission on anything that's purchased through my site. Most years, it's been the highest revenue driver for me out of any month in the entire year.
However, I've said it before and I'll say it again, for me and in this season - the days of endless outfit posts have dissipated quite a bit. I'm much more intentional about what's filling my closet (my time, my home, and my headspace) and to be honest, it's not a ton of seasonal, trendy pieces that I'll probably donate by this time next year.
How can I preach minimalism + closet staples while also telling you that you NEED ALL of these things from the sale. Oh, and you have to put them on your credit card to get them.
To be completely transparent, here are 4 reasons why I'm not promoting the sale like I typically do:
1. / It's too much. There are staple things that I purchase every single year from the sale - and I will this year, too. A few beauty items like my favorite Kiehl's lotion that will last me until next year's sale, a product or two I keep on constant rotation, and my favorite, Diptyque candles. Always! Aside from that, I may purchase a neutral cardigan that I'll throw on all season long, possibly a pair of flats from a brand like Vince or one I truly love, and a couple of things for J. Other than that, I simply don't need any of it. I spend upwards of $1000 each year because I get caught up in the sale. Making sure I get it before it sells out and spending way too much money to do so. Like I mentioned before, most of the pieces I purchase don't stay in my closet until the next year. It's taken me 5 years to realize, why the investment?
2. / It's not realistic. Let's be honest, the sale gets us all really excited for Fall, but for me, I can't even think about wearing those pieces I'm purchasing for another 4 months. At least. That's why I usually stick to a cardigan I can layer or something versatile because the rest of it will just sit pretty in my closet with the tags on it until the weather cools down. Again, beauty favorites and possibly a home item or two make way more sense for me.
3. / I'm an influencer and I get sick of hearing about the sale. If you follow a few fashion bloggers on instagram and/or read their blogs, you should turn the words 'Nordstrom Sale' into a drinking game today. Actually, don't because you'll be down for the count. And trust me, I get it - it's our job to promote things like this and let you in on our latest and greatest finds. However, this sale has turned into be that x a million. We all promote and share things that we feel are on brand for us, so to each their own. But, knowing where to draw that line sometimes is half the battle. And please know, I'm not bashing any of other blogger who is promoting this sale today. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Not in the last five years and not today. I'm just letting you know why I don't feel right about it this year. I'm fine with being, actually I want to be, the one influencer in your feed today who's not talking about it.
4. / I'm not the best one anyway! Can I pick out the best neutrals from the sale and recommend them? Absolutely! However, there are so many other influencers out there who I love that take the time to review the pieces ahead of time, go into a store and try them on so that they truly know the quality, and work tirelessly to help you shop the sale the best + most efficient way. My early alarm clock doesn't have anything on the time they pour into helping you navigate the sale! A few of my favorites who will be ON IT today with the best #NSALE content is Jennifer Lake (statement pieces, work wear, and color), Fashion Jackson (my fellow neutral lover, basics at an adorable price), and Emily Ann Gemma (who has probably tried/tested every beauty product on the planet)! If you're looking to shop the sale and need an amazing, honest resource to go to - these are your girls!
I'm currently still in Mexico and I'll be shopping the sale at some point today to grab my annual favorites and whatever else I think is actually worth the investment. I will most definitely share with you what I purchase from the sale - aside from that, I just don't have it in me this year. I so appreciate being able to be open + honest with y'all - I want this space to be one where we can call things for what they are, in a positive + uplifting way, and simply be transparent. Over the last few years, getting to know and understanding myself more has changed this space in so many ways and I'm proud of that. I have to, and always want to, practice what I preach.
I'll circle back around later today (while I'm on our flight home!) and update this post with what I purchased - until then, have a beautiful weekend!
