I love throwing myself into a project.  There's just something about dreaming up an idea and making it come to life that's so challenging + rewarding.  Our kitchen is not one of the rooms we renovated when we moved into the cottage, but we did spruce it up a little here and there.  Fresh paint on the walls + cabinets, new hardware, appliances, faucet, tile floor, and a large island really did the trick for the most part.  However, there was one wall in between two windows that needed a little love.

The wall had been blank for almost a year while we figured out what we wanted to do.  Rather than invest in adding additional cabinets for storage, we decided on adding open shelving that would serve the storage purpose + add character to the room at the same time.  We figured between the countertop and two shelves, we would be able to style the area both functionally and appealing.  

As I started to hunt for the perfect reclaimed wood shelves, I realized it was much harder than I expected!  Finding the right "color" wood, floating or not floating, length to fit our narrow space, etc - it ended up taking me a month or so to pull the trigger on these.  But, I'm SO glad I did.  They're absolutely perfect and I actually fell in love with the company.  Their service + shipping is great and best of all, they sell on Houzz, so it's super easy to shop.  They'll even do custom orders, too!  (Not sponsored by the way, I just really liked them!)

As far as styling goes, I knew I wanted a new + vintage mix with stacked french cookbooks + fresh flowers, always.  Functionally, I filled the space with the things we reach for most often - flatware, a glass for juice in the mornings, salt + pepper, etc.  Aside from that, I wanted a few vintage favorites to really add character + sentimental things to the shelves.  The vintage Veuve Clicquot bottle from the 1930's that J surprised me with for Valentine's Day, vintage wooden spoons from a flea market in France, and vintage milk glass my in-laws got us for Christmas one year.  Our entire home is filled with a mix of old and new - the combination adds so much charm!
